Best pies in NZ I've been in love with NZ pies since I came here in the 90s and Sheffield's is the best. They have found the happy medium between not too bougie and a gas station pie. Sheffield's has awesome workers that are quick to serve. In one visit we went back into the store 3 times for more pies. We initially got the blueberry and a couple of mince and cheese pies. The mince pies were traditional NZ pies but with quality ingredients. Then we went back in for a steak and cheese and bacon, egg and cheese because the first pies were soooo good. Before we left we got a brisket, jalapeno and cheese pie and this was my favorite. As an avid smoker they don't skip out on a truly smoked brisket. Even without the rest of the ingredients I would eat their brisket. But chunks of brisket, jalapenos, cheese and their beautifully flaky crust... amazing. I'm going to come here on every visit to NZ. It's worth the drive from anywhere on the South Island.
We loved Sheffield Pies. It was obvious from the vehicles parked it was popular and once we walked in we could see why. We chose the Sheffield Pastie, the smoke brisket and cheese pie and the venison and whisky chutney. All I can say is top notch pies. Flaky pastry, jam packed fillings and the brisket was to die for. (Don't forget to blow on the pie! 😊). If you are on the way up towards Arthur's pass be sure to stop here for pie heaven.

I’m not usually a fan of pies—but I have to admit, the pies here are the best!! I ordered the beef & cheese pie based on the staff’s recommendation, and it did not disappoint. The filling was generous, flavorful, and absolutely delicious. I paired it with a cup of tea, and it was the perfect combo! If you’re not sure which flavor to try, I highly recommend the beef & cheese—it’s seriously good!
I ran into Sheffield Pies on the Great Alpine Highway expecting another legendary pie moment... ordered two venison pies thinking I was about to experience something rugged, alpine and unforgettable... one venison and whiskey... the other plain venison... and honestly the contrast between them felt like two completely different worlds. First up I'll get this out of the way… before I tell you why this place has 5 stars… the venison and whiskey...ouch… it sounded incredible on paper... bold, fancy, slightly mysterious... but the reality seriously disappointed me. The whiskey relish leaned noticeably sweet and completely shifted the pie away from a proper savoury experience... instead of enhancing the venison it drowned it... turning what should have been deep, earthy, powerful flavour into something confused... almost like dessert accidentally wandered into a meat pie. It felt gimmicky and I felt betrayed.. Insulted.. Hurt .. offended… it was something that might impress a meat pie rookie chasing novelty... but for someone who takes savoury pies seriously it missed the mark completely. I genuinely felt annoyed because the idea sounded so good but the execution just wasn’t right. It was murder. Then I tried the plain venison pie... and wow... A completely different story. The venison on its own was incredible... rich, deep, earthy flavour with real character... proper meat, proper depth, nothing trying too hard... just honest execution that let the ingredient shine. This one had that quiet confidence where every bite makes you slow down and appreciate what’s happening... easily amazing. The biggest takeaway... the venison itself is absolutely elite... it doesn’t need sweet whiskey relish or other stupid fancy distractions. Sometimes simplicity wins... and in this case the plain venison pie proved exactly that. I recommend this place come here and try their pies! 5 stars!!
