Barefoot campers were a dream to rent from! 3 of us rented the Wallace Freshy for 6 weeks, travelling from Christchurch to Auckland. The initial renting agreements were super easy and quick and the team were really on it reply to messages. We had no problems with the van, it was a great size, perfect for cities and more rural areas. Everything worked great and the team were only a messge away! Such a wonderful trip and a really reliable, easy to drive van and such a lovely and friendly business. 10/10 would recommend!

We have just finished traveling around New Zealand for 5 weeks in a Wallace Freshy and it’s been the experience of a lifetime. The van was so well equipped for what we needed, it made our experience so much more comfortable and convenient. The layout of the van is well thought out, with plenty of space and facilities like the tap, foot wash and waste disposal that were easy to use and tucked away nicely. The bed is easy to convert and comfy too! The Barefoot team have been brilliant, extremely friendly and really helpful, you feel that they are a business that cares about its customers seeing them as more than just numbers on a page. Would recommend these guys to anyone for their New Zealand adventure!

Very poor and unsafe experience – avoid this branch We had an extremely bad experience with Scotties Car Rentals (Christchurch branch). We rented a vehicle from 13 February to 18 February 2026, and the car provided was an old Toyota Alphard in very poor condition. On 18 February, while driving back from Queenstown, a part underneath the front bonnet came loose and was hanging. When we contacted the Christchurch branch, instead of arranging proper assistance, we were shockingly advised to tie the part with a rope and continue driving to Christchurch. This was extremely unsafe and irresponsible. With no other option, we had to seek help from other drivers on the road and managed to drive approximately 150 km in that condition. This caused significant stress and we almost missed our flight back to Auckland. To make matters worse, the company later charged $135.14 NZD to our credit card on 26 February 2026 without proper communication. They claimed it was for unpaid parking between 9–10 pm on 13 February, but failed to provide any clear evidence when requested. The staff response was unprofessional, mentioning “lawyers involved” and speaking in an inappropriate manner instead of resolving the issue transparently. This experience raises serious concerns about: Vehicle safety and maintenance Customer service and support Unauthorised charges I strongly advise others to avoid this branch. This was not only a disappointing experience but also a potentially dangerous one. I will be escalating this matter further.

Very disappointing experience. The service was poor, and their ability to handle problems was extremely frustrating. If you are looking for a hassle-free car rental experience, I would not recommend this company. Think carefully before choosing them.

Could not recommend Barefoot Campers enough! We had the best experience of hiring a campervan and travelled around the South island for a week in comfort. The company is extremely quick to respond to any messages whilst you’re out travelling and they make the whole process seamless. We have been incredibly lucky, so thank you Barefoot!
