TLDR: Tesla owner's take — switched to petrol for a South Island winter road trip and don't regret it. Rented from EZI Car Rental twice (RAV4 AWD, then Corolla hatchback) over 2 months, zero issues, great staff. 900km per tank meant no range anxiety, and running the heater freely (no EV energy math) made cold-weather driving way more comfortable. I spent two months road-tripping around the South Island this winter and rented two cars from EZI Car Rental: a brand-new 2025 RAV4 AWD for 13 days, and later a brand-new 2025 Corolla hatchback for a full month. The overall experience was excellent — no issues at all throughout. I dealt with four different staff members over the course of the rentals, and every single one was genuinely friendly and helpful. Pickup and drop-off were smooth both times. One thing worth mentioning: I normally drive a Tesla, but for this winter trip I deliberately chose a petrol car, and it turned out to be exactly the right call. A full tank got me about 900km, which made a huge difference given how far apart things are on the South Island and how much sparser charging infrastructure is outside the main towns — zero range anxiety. And having an engine meant I could run the heater as much as I wanted without thinking twice about energy consumption, which made cold winter driving so much more comfortable compared to an EV. To be fair, I'm pretty sure a Tesla would actually be more fun to drive on the South Island's mountain roads — the instant torque and handling are hard to beat. But that comes with a trade-off: you'd need to plan your charging stops more carefully, and overall charging time would add up over a two-month trip. Both cars were in great condition, the whole rental process was hassle-free, and I'd happily book with EZI Car Rental again. If you're on the fence about which rental company to go with, don't overthink it — just go with these guys.

We had a Ford Puma, it was so convenient. Well maintained, and intuitive. The car had a system that connects to your phone for easy navigation using google maps and a rear camera that made parking a breeze.

We hired a Mitsubishi Outlander and it was perfect for our trip in the mountains. Easy to book online, lovely staff at ChCh airport. Car in great condition. Easy to find in the airport carpark and to return. They even returned items we left behind 🫣

Clean, tidy, comfortable to drive Easy pick up and drop off and fabulous customer service… will definitely use their services again if needed… hired 2 different cars for the 2 weeks I required
