A pleasant experience from picking up the car, driving around the South Island to returning the car. We got given a 2023 Hyundai I30 as no Mazda 3’s were available. We had a great time driving this car. There were no faults and everything ran smoothly. Very comfortable and easy to drive.

Clean, efficient and good value car provided. My only comment is that it’s not very clear on the payment policy, and there was a misunderstanding with regards to the deposit amount covering the rental cost, and then the rental cost being charged again at the end and then original payment being released later on. Still not a hundred percent sure what went on but all good.

A complete service disaster.
When we arrived to pick up the car, after waiting in line for about 20 minutes, the staff member at the counter informed us that our driver’s licenses had to be translated into English. This requirement was not specified anywhere in their email, which I will attach as proof.
When I explained that although my father did not have a translation, I live in Australia and do have an official English translation of my own license done by a certified translator, he told me it was not valid because “the translation has to be done in New Zealand.” He then gave us the contact of their own “recommended” translator, who charged NZD 55 per person/license in order to release the car.
This felt like pure extortion. Of course, once we agreed, the whole “translation” process took less than 20 minutes, clearly a service designed only to charge extra money. After completing everything, I went back to the counter (having already waited in line once) and was told I had to queue again for another 30 minutes to be assisted.
Very poor service. I do not recommend it. On top of everything, it creates a terrible first impression of the country.

The have taken a $200.00 presumably a bond, over 7 days ago. Refusing to respond and refund. I returned the car refuel led and undamaged. I should have used Go Rentals like I always do. This company sucks. Over priced and abysmal service. DO NOT Use unless you want your credit card loaded with unjustified charges that the refuse to communicate about.

We booked through eDreams for a Intermediate SUV (displayed as RAV4) for our whole 8-days trip - taking car at Queenstown and returning at Christchurch. Price was reasonable (imo) at NZ$700 so roughly less than NZ$90 per day.
However when we checked in at Queenstown, the insurance we paid with eDreams had NZ$3750 excess so we paid nearly extra NZ$400 to bring excess down to 0 (this cost included NZ$130 in fuel as Avis charged only NZ$2.75/litre compared to nearly NZ$3 outside at petrol station for 91 fuel).
Staff at Queenstown was nice and informative however they offered an MG at first while we booked for a RAV4. Ofc anyone familiar with rental cars would know initial car is just a reference but we asked for a different one (I wouldn’t trust MG). So the other offers were either a Nissan Xtrail or a Mazda CX-5. We took the cx5 straightaway and surprisingly it was 2023 model. Couldn’t be happier. A note is to always talk to the staff and you might be in for a nice surprise.
One other thing to be careful is that the photos might be completely different to the current condition of the cars. Ours had multiple glue marks around the car (which we initially thought were scratches).
Check out at Christchurch couldn’t be easier. We were happy as well.
Only thing is that our total bill came to NZ$1100 and even though we deposited NZ$200 with eDreams, we were still charged full amount by Avis. Will have to spend more time chasing eDreams for refund of the initial deposit.
4 stars because of the more expensive charge than expected + hassle to chase eDream for refund.
